Sustainability
PaperStone® is primarily made with FSC® certified recycled paper cardboard combined with a patented phenolic resin, PetroFree®.
Paper and old cardboard boxes are recycled to obtain stacked layers of paper. The paper is saturated with a pigmented, petroleum-free, natural resin and pressed under heat and pressure into a solid sheet.
Not only is PaperStone® made from a recycling process, it is also recyclable at the end of its life cycle, by re-polishing and re-purposing the material for future projects.
Colour and texture
PaperStone® colours are warm, rich and natural hues and tones, often with a soft and subtly variegated finish. There are 11 colours across two ranges.
The Solid Colour Series: Five soft, deep, rich organic colours, reflecting nature. Some of these colours ‘evolve’ over time, mellowing and growing with their environment to become more intense and warmer. Each of these colours has a solid, homogeneous appearance through its entire thickness, with the colour running through the depth of the sheet.
The Designer Series: Still reflecting nature but a little more geological than organic. These six colours are lighter than the Solid Colour Series, they have perfect homogeneity in the panel surface and all (except Charcoal and Honey) have ‘tone-on-tone’ striated edges, a unique and visually arresting feature that allows scope for, literally, leading-edge design detailing.
Sustainability and material performance
PaperStone® is certified FSC®: Forest Stewardship Council® is the mark of responsible forestry. It identifies products containing wood sourced at forests managed correctly and responsibly according to strict environmental, social and economic standards.
Rainforest Alliance Certified: The Rainforest Alliance certification seal means that the product (or a specified ingredient) was produced by farmers, foresters, and/or companies working together to create a world where people and nature thrive in harmony.
SmartWood: PaperStone® is one of the few architectural surface materials certified by the SmartWood program of the Rainforest Alliance to FSC standards for using 100% post-consumer recycled paper.
PetroFree™: Phenolic resin derived from plant-based and industrial by-product sources, eliminating the need for synthetic, petroleum-derived resins. Non-toxic and doesn’t emit any VOC.
Environmental Product Declaration: The PaperStone® EPD quantifiably demonstrates the environmental impacts of the material. It also allows us to provide transparent data which supports architects and designers to gain recognition and accreditation from building assessment schemes, such as BREEAM, LEED and WELL Building Standard®.
The certificate covers colours Charcoal, Graphite, Gunmetal, Pewter, Sand and Slate, and is expected to be extended to the whole range.
