SpaceInvader were tasked with designing a subterranean co-working space located in Bruntwood SciTech’s Glasshouse, with the space being named, Nest. As part of the development of Nest, plans were put in place for it to contain a wellness studio. To capture the feel of the environment, SpaceInvader chose to use M|R Walls as a captivating feature of the studio space.

M|R Walls Honey design was selected for a 9 metre by 3 metre area. Made using Corian® Solid Surface Glacier White, the wall was expertly CNC’d, fabricated and installed by Parametric Walls. the exclusive manufacturer, installer and lighting supplier for M|R Walls in the UK and Ireland. CDUK is the exclusive surface material supplier for M|R Walls in the UK and Ireland.

Sarah Dabbs from SpaceInvader worked closely on the project has shared the reasons for specifying M|R Walls. “When designing the wellness studio at Nest, it was important to create a safe and considerate space prioritising the user’s overall wellbeing. Nest being a subterranean space meant that we could use the lack of natural light to our advantage. We located the wellness studio in the darkest corner on plan so that we were able to create something ethereal using artificial lighting.

We wanted the space to have a warm ambient soft glow much like the effects of a sunset to promote feelings of calm, and to create intrigue through the glazed partitions to draw people into the space.

We received a sample of M|R Walls from CDUK and also visited their pod at Material Source Studio in Manchester to see an M|R Walls installation on display. From seeing the multidimensional surface with its backlighting capabilities first hand, we instantly knew that it would be the perfect solution.

The vast range of natural forms to choose from worked hand in hand with our organic yet tech-driven concept. The ability to choose a specific light colour or have it merging into different colours was well received, as it meant that the space could be adapted to suit the user’s needs or feelings.

This is a much-frequented space that has had phenomenal feedback throughout Bruntwood SciTech’s Glasshouse.”

SpaceInvader’s Director, John Williams has commented on the feature wall saying “This stand-out feature really finishes the scheme off in style. It’s intriguing when glimpsed and highly impactful when seen in full, functioning as much as an art piece as a mood-defining piece of design.”

SpaceInvader’s work on Nest project has been successful in winning and being shortlisted for a number of design awards in 2023. Some of the awards won include, London Design Awards Gold, Co-Working & Studio Space, European Design Awards Gold, Co-Working & Studio Space and Wild Design Awards Silver, Co-Working & Studio Space. Nest was also a finalist in FX Awards, UK Workspace any size and Mixology North, Project of the Year – Workplace Interiors (15,000-30,000 sq ft).

Nest at Glasshouse is now up and running with the Glasshouse being the home of numerous companies spanning software development, digital health, AI, gaming, fintech, and app development. Within the studio, the M|R Walls installation stands out as a significant focal point, garnering some amazing feedback.
